Small Space, Full Function
The kitchen and bathroom are the most expensive rooms per square foot in any DADU — and the most important to get right. A well-designed DADU kitchen and bathroom feel complete and comfortable despite their compact size. A poorly designed one feels cramped and frustrating, no matter how nice the finishes.
The key is efficient layout, smart storage, and quality fixtures that maximize every inch.
DADU Kitchen Design
Layout Options for Small Kitchens
- Galley kitchen (60–80 sq ft): Two parallel counters with a walkway between. Efficient workflow, compact footprint. Works in units as small as 400 sq ft.
- L-shaped kitchen (80–120 sq ft): Counter along two walls. Opens to living space. The most popular DADU kitchen layout.
- Single-wall kitchen (40–60 sq ft): Everything along one wall. Most compact option. Works in studios and very small units.
- Peninsula kitchen (100–140 sq ft): L-shaped with an extending counter that serves as dining bar. Adds counter space and defines the kitchen area in open floor plans.
Appliance Sizing
- Refrigerator: Full-size (24″ or 30″ width) is strongly recommended. Counter-depth models save space without sacrificing capacity. Compact 24″ fridges work in studios.
- Range/cooktop: 24″ or 30″ ranges work well. Induction cooktops are energy-efficient, fast, and add no combustion gases to the space.
- Dishwasher: 18″ compact dishwashers fit in tight layouts. A dishwasher is a major quality-of-life feature — don’t skip it to save space.
- Microwave: Over-range microwaves save counter space. Built-in microwave drawers are a premium option.
- Washer/dryer: Ventless combo units or stacked compact washer/dryers fit in a closet. In-unit laundry is a top renter priority.
Counter Space Strategies
- Minimum 6 linear feet of counter space for functionality
- A small overhang on a peninsula or island creates a dining/work area without a separate table
- Cutting board inserts over the sink increase prep space when needed
- Fold-down wall tables provide dining space that disappears when not in use
Cabinet and Storage Solutions
- Full-height upper cabinets: Go to the ceiling — don’t leave wasted space above. Upper cabinets to 8′ or 9′ provide significant additional storage.
- Pull-out pantry: A narrow pull-out pantry (6″–12″ wide) provides impressive storage in minimal space.
- Corner solutions: Lazy Susans or pull-out corner units eliminate dead corners in L-shaped layouts.
- Under-sink organizers: Pull-out bins and shelves maximize the space around plumbing.
- Open shelving: Can replace some upper cabinets — makes the kitchen feel more open while providing display and access to everyday items.
Kitchen Finishes That Elevate Small Spaces
- Quartz countertops: Durable, low-maintenance, and available in colors that brighten a small kitchen. $50–$90/sq ft installed.
- Shaker-style cabinets: Clean lines that work with any design style. Soft-close hardware is a small upgrade that makes a big difference.
- Tile backsplash: Subway tile is classic and affordable. Extends the visual height of the space and protects walls.
- Under-cabinet lighting: LED strips or puck lights illuminate work surfaces and add warmth.
DADU Bathroom Design
Size Planning
- Full bathroom (minimum): 40–50 sq ft. Includes shower, toilet, and vanity.
- Comfortable full bathroom: 55–70 sq ft. Room for a linen closet or storage.
- Half bath (if space allows): 20–25 sq ft. Toilet and small vanity. Valuable in two-bedroom DADUs.
Shower vs. Tub
- Walk-in shower: Recommended for most DADUs. More space-efficient than a tub. Curbless showers improve accessibility and make the bathroom feel larger.
- Tub/shower combo: Standard 60″ x 30″ alcove tub. Provides bathing option but takes more space. May appeal to families with young children.
- For aging-in-place DADUs: Curbless shower with grab bars, hand-held shower head, and built-in bench.
Vanity and Storage
- Floating vanity: Creates visual space below, making the bathroom feel larger. 24″–36″ width for single sink.
- Medicine cabinet: Recessed into the wall for additional storage without taking floor space. Mirrored front serves double duty.
- Recessed niches: Built into shower walls for shampoo and soap storage. Eliminates the need for hanging caddies.
- Over-toilet shelving or cabinet: Uses otherwise wasted vertical space.
Bathroom Finishes
- Large-format tile: Fewer grout lines makes the space feel bigger. 12″ x 24″ floor tiles are ideal.
- Floor-to-ceiling tile in shower: Waterproof, easy to clean, and visually expands the space.
- Good lighting: A well-lit bathroom feels bigger. Combine vanity lighting with recessed ceiling lights.
- Quality fixtures: Matte black or brushed nickel hardware adds a modern touch without significant cost. Spend here — hardware is what people touch and notice daily.
Plumbing Layout Efficiency
Place the kitchen and bathroom on adjacent or shared walls (“wet wall” approach):
- Reduces plumbing runs by 30–50%
- Saves $2,000–$4,000 in plumbing costs
- Simplifies inspection and future maintenance
- Consolidates drain, waste, and vent lines into a compact area
Budget Allocation for Kitchen and Bath
For an 800 sq ft DADU with a total construction budget of $250,000:
- Kitchen (cabinets, countertops, appliances, fixtures): $12,000–$25,000
- Bathroom (tile, vanity, shower, toilet, fixtures): $6,000–$14,000
- Total kitchen + bath: $18,000–$39,000 (7–16% of construction budget)
This is where finish selections have the biggest impact on both cost and perceived quality. See our cost breakdown guide for the full picture.
